Cause of Bad Breath - Your Key to Get Rid of Smelly Breath

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Darren_A._Wumoult]Darren A. Wumoult

Bad breath is a fairly common oral condition that affects many of people in the world, just some more than others. People with bad breath are often stigmatized as being inconsiderate or lazy because they don't to maintain basic oral hygiene like brushing their teeth but the truth is that poor oral hygiene only accounts for a small percentage of cases of bad breath. In reality, many people are unaware of the many reasons why bad breath can arise and they are far more common and innocuous than people think.
Bad breath is actually caused by an accumulation of bad bacteria in the mouth that combine to produce sulphur molecules that bring about the foul smell typical of smelly breath sufferers. It can also be caused by particles of food stuck in hard to reach places in between teeth, underneath the tongue and at the back of the mouth that, left alone and undisturbed, degenerate into smaller parts that also cause your breath condition. Beside this basic underlying cause of bad breath, there are also other normal causes.

Food that you consume
Some food like onions and garlic have substances that cause chemical reactions to happen after ingestion which contribute to causing halitosis. These chemicals stay in the digestive system long after being consumed and this explains why the foul smell can remain in a person's breath long after a meal. Avoid these foods if you do not wish to compromise your clean smelling breath and cause your mouth to produce an odour.

Smelly breath is sometimes caused by nasal problems in the respiratory tract or nose. For example, if there is an excess of mucus in the nose, this could move to the back of the throat where it can cover the area at the back of the throat with a thin layer of slime and in a way protect the bacteria from being washed away. This is a possible cause of bad breath. To solve this, it is recommended that you buy a nasal spray that ban be found at most pharmaceutical stores and use it before sleeping each night.

Gum disease
Foul breath can also be caused by forms of gum disease such as periodontal disease. If you find that your gums are often red and swollen and perhaps brushing of flossing causes bleeding, it is possible that you have a certain form of gum disease that can be one of the causes of bad breath. In this case, this might be indicative of a larger problem and it might be a good time to see a dentist for further diagnosis.

Stress and other factors
Studies have shown that stress is likely to increase the probability of people having worse breath than others. It is very much possible that stress and other external factors like environment and genetic reason can cause an increase in severity of smelly breath, although it is difficult to explain how exactly these factors are linked. This is a possible cause of bad breath.

To achieve a new lease of fresh breath, you need to first identify the [http://www.badbreathkiller.com/]Cause Of Bad Breath. Without doing so, you are not going to be able to apply the right treatment for it.

Using the wrong cure will only prolong your embarrassment. So say good bye to smelly breath by visiting [http://www.badbreathkiller.com]http://www.badbreathkiller.com.

The Role of the Mouth in Bad Breath

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dr_Charles_John]Dr Charles John

"Paramount Home Entertainment" commissioned a national survey of single women aged 25 and over to find the number 1 reason why they would turn down a date. The survey was to coincide with a film starring Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker about a man who has yet to leave his parent's home.

Among all women surveyed the reason they would refuse a date was -

"Bad breath" - 37%
"He lives with his parents - 25%
"He dresses poorly," - 8%
"He's a sports fanatic" - 5%
"He Makes less Money than me" - 2%

"Harlequin Romance" recently ran a survey of North Americans to find out more about what turns them on and makes them tick romantically. 57% of men and 58% of women in North America all cited the same romantic relationship killer: Halitosis

That's right -halitosis was the most cited reason to 'run away from a romantic relationship' by men, beating out excessive sweating, smoking, and other unhealthy habits.

For women, the only thing considered worse about a potential mate than halitosis, was excessive drinking.

According to the survey, ladies would tolerate a man who sweat too much, smoked, had a fake orange tan and hair implants before they would become romantically involved with a man who had chronic breath odour.

"The Daily Star" recently published a survey.

Women rate bad breath as their biggest worry before a romantic encounter, with 78% fretting about it. Researchers found girls were more scared of having smelly breath than of their partner disliking their appearance. Only 4% said they were concerned about what undies to wear.

A spokeswoman, said: "If you feel happy with your teeth you'll smile, and that boosts others' perceptions of you."

Halitosis can wreck you life. It can wreck it socially, professionally and it can wreck it psychologically.

1) The Mouth.

It is estimated that up to 90% of the causes of bad breath, originate in the mouth!

a) The Tongue.

The main culprit in the mouth is the top of the tongue. It is here that huge numbers of harmless bacteria live and thrive, feeding off dead mouth cells and food debris. Some of these bacteria are called anaerobic bacteria which means they thrive in the absence of oxygen. Now the surface of the tongue is covered in tiny grooves, barely visible to the naked eye, but in comparison to bacteria, they are massive. Therefore, many, many, anaerobic bacteria can settle in the grooves, where they become covered with dead mouth cells, other bacteria and food debris. In this way, their oxygen supply is cut off, which is exactly what they love - anaerobic conditions.

All this may sound a bit unpleasant, but that's only half the story. Some of these anaerobic bacteria produce substances called Volatile Sulphour Compounds (VSCs) which smell like rotten eggs, or like decaying flesh.

"It is these VSCs that are the cause of bad breath."

Other parts of the mouth also contribute to the overall bad smell, but are not as much as the top of the tongue.

b) Inter-dental Spaces.

These are the spaces between the teeth. They are usually small pyramid-shaped areas that easily trap food, plaque and dead mouth cells, again providing ideal conditions for those VSC-producing bacteria

c) The Gums.

Bacteria growing below the gum line have a foul smell, and in my 30 years of clinical experience, diseased gums definitely involved in the production of bad breath.

Poorly made filling, crowns, veneers, bridges etc., can trap food, plaque and the VSC-producing bacteria

2) The Nose.

The second major source of bad breath is the nose. However the odors that originate here have a different smell to those of the mouth.

Nasal odors may be due to sinus infections or foreign bodies that have become lodged (often seen in young children).

3) The Tonsils

The tonsils are considered a minor cause of bad breath, accounting for some 3-5% of cases.

However, about 7% of the population suffers from tonsiloliths that smell extremely foul and these can cause bad breath.

4) The Stomach

Some less than honest businesses, using powerful advertising, have attempted to foster the belief - that bad breath comes from the stomach rather than from the mouth.

The stomach is a very uncommon source of bad breath (except in belching). The oesophagus (a muscular tube that directs food and drink from the mouth to the stomach), is closed at the stomach end, so smells are not able to escape.

5) Systemic diseases

Bad breath that is caused by disease, is extremely rare, so I merely

include them just for the sake of completeness.

a) Chronic liver failure b) Bronchial and lung infections c) Renal infections d) Renal failure e) Some forms of cancer f) "Fish Odour Syndrome" g) Diabetes mellitus. h) Metabolic dysfunction.

If you suffered from any of the above, you would also suffer from many additional symptoms.

"You should not assume that you suffer from these conditions or diseases. Bad breath is nearly always just bad breath"

6) Diet.

There are certain foods and drinks to avoid if you wish to keep your breath fresh.

Garlic Fish Cheese Onions Meat Alcohol

Bad breath is also more common if you are obese.

So, to sum up:

"The commonest source of bad breath is the mouth and the commonest source of bad breath in the mouth is the upper surface of the tongue."

Bad Breath - The Number One Cause of a Disappointing Social Life

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Dawson]Peter Dawson

Are you noticing that your friends don't seem quite as friendly lately as they once did? Perhaps your partner seems a little distant. Maybe you're having trouble even finding a partner, it just seems that no one wants to get close to you these days.

Bad breath can be a real curse. It's something that you may not even know you have, and even your best friend is reluctant to tell you about. Having breath that smells can affect all your relationships very seriously, and often the person who suffers from bad breath doesn't even know they've got it.

Halitosis is the technical term. It means that your breath smells, and anyone close to you smells it. Usually it smells bad, it's unlikely that it smells good, and so anyone who gets too close to you will withdraw to a safer distance just to avoid the smell.

And forget kissing.

In fact bad breath can be one of the biggest factors in an inability to maintain good relationships, including friendships and romantic attachments.

What is bad breath and what causes it? Is there anything you can do about it if you have it? Lets have a look at what bad breath is.

There can be a relatively wide range of causes, and the cause may vary quite a bit from one person to another. For example it is well known that eating certain foods like garlic can result in an offensive odor, both on the breath and often more generally through the body. There are various foods that can cause your breath to smell.

There are also causes that are more specific and can, if left unchecked, be more permanent and difficult to control. For example there are dental conditions like periodontal disease which can have a marked effect on the freshness of the breath. Poor brushing of teeth can lead to excess plaque which in turn can lead to gingivitis, also a culprit in bad breath.

There are various chronic diseases which can also lead to bad breath as well. Various lung diseases or liver diseases, for example, can cause bad breath. And that isn't all the medical conditions that you could be suffering from that can cause halitosis, some of which you may not even know you have.

Even some nose and throat infections can be responsible.

Then there's the obvious causes, like smoking.

And there's more causes of bad breath too. The list can be quite extensive.

So how do you know if you have it? You can stand in front of yourself and sniff the breeze. Well of course the first thing you could do is to ask someone close to you to tell you if your breath smells. That might be a little embarrassing.

Alternatively just breathe on the back of your hand and breath in through your nose. You should know just from that test if you have it or not.

The good news is that, in most cases, there are some simple steps to take to eliminate halitosis. In some more complicated cases medical intervention is required, but it is more likely for you that there is a simple home remedy for bad breath that can be inexpensive to use and quite effective. Often bad breath can be a thing of the past in no time.

And if you banish it you'll immediately notice an improvement in your friendships, and romantic attachments. It's probably the simplest thing you can do to improve your sex life.

So if you're noticing that things aren't quite right with your social life consider the possibility that your breath smells. It's simple, in most cases, to fix, and will liven up your social life more than you could imagine.

Bad Breath Cure Secrets Exposed

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Rodrick]Peter Rodrick

Bad breath or halitosis is not an uncommon condition. Regrettably, most people who offend in this respect are totally unaware of their problem.

Halitosis or Bad breath symptoms

Bad breath

The most obvious symptoms of bad breath are when you smell your own breath! Put a handkerchief
on your palm and smell. If the smell is odorous, you have bad breath problem.

Halitosis or bad breath causes

Diseased gums, dental decompose

The most ordinary cause of bad breath (halitosis) is unhealthy gums. Dental decay at the roots of the teeth may result in sore in the gums with foul-smelling pus, giving an unpleasant odor to the breath. Even small holes in the teeth may give a place where germs can grow and release foul odors.

Conditions of nose, throat and Respiratory area

Other causes of bad breath are conditions of the nose, throat, respiratory area, or stomach which are connected with chronic infection or local upsets of one type or another, such as chronic tonsillitis, lung diseases like chronic bronchitis, chronic gastritis, and sinusitis which causes a release at the back of the throat. Many cases of bad breath, however, are caused by gastro-intestinal disorders, intestinal sluggishness and mainly by chronic constipation.

Home remedies for bad breath (Halitosis)

1. Halitosis treatment with Fenugreek

Amongst the many home remedies for halitosis, the use of fenugreek has proved most useful. A tea made from the seeds of this vegetable must be taken frequently for correcting the situation. This tea is made by putting one teaspoon of seeds in half a litre of cold water and permits it to simmer for fifteen minutes over a low flame. It must then be strained and used as tea.

2. Halitosis treatment with help of Avocado

Another effectual remedy for bad breath is avocado, which is far better to any mouth lotion or remedies for this state. It efficiently removes intestinal putrefaction or decay which is one of the most important causes of bad breath.

3. Halitosis treatment with Guava

Fresh guava is helpful in halitosis. It is source of tannic, malic, oxalic, and phosphoric acids as well as calcium, oxalate, and manganese. Chewing it is an outstanding tonic for the teeth and gums. It helps cure bleeding from gums and discontinues bad breath. Munching or chewing tender leaves of guava tree also stops bleeding from gums and bad breath.

4. Halitosis treatment with Parsley

Parsley is a precious Cure for bad breath. Two cups of water must be boiled and several twigs of parsley, coarsely cut, should be steeped in this water along with two or three whole cloves or a quarter teaspoon of ground cloves. This infusion should be stirred occasionally while cooling. It must then be strained and it can be used as a mouthwash or gargle many times in a day.

5.Halitosis treatment with Raw Juices

All fruit and vegetable juices are helpful in the treatment of halitosis or bad bretah and should be taken generously by those suffering from this disorder. Juices from green vegetables are particularly valuable.

Bad Breath and Chewing Tobacco

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=R._Drysdale]R. Drysdale

Most people know that smoking causes halitosis but think that bad breath and chewing tobacco aren't a problem. If you're not exhaling smoke, how could it cause a bad odor on the breath? Unfortunately, just as chewing tobacco carries its own risk of cancers and other health problems, it comes with a link to halitosis as well.

It's known that tobacco use is linked to periodontal disease: tobacco apparently causes the gums to lose some of their ability to adhere to the teeth. They start to pull away and then recede, exposing dentin and creating pockets between the teeth and gums where bacteria can grow. Exposed dentin is sensitive to heat and cold, and susceptible to tooth decay, while oral bacteria frequently include those that produce sulfur compounds, the odor we associate with halitosis. This is one way that bad breath and chewing tobacco go hand in hand.

Periodontal disease is a slow chronic disease and it takes an extended period of time to develop; however, there is a more immediate connection between bad breath and chewing tobacco. Tobacco causes a decrease in the amount of saliva that is produced to bathe the inside of the mouth and control the proliferation of oral bacteria. Anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that grow in the absence of oxygen) living on the back of the tongue and in pockets and creases elsewhere in the mouth are controlled by saliva. These bacteria cause halitosis by producing foul smelling volatile sulfur compounds as a byproduct of their metabolism. The fewer of them you have in your mouth the better.

Obviously, the longer you go on using tobacco, the more likely you are to develop bad breath as a result. If you are fostering the growth of halitosis bacteria, and developing gum disease, the risk will be higher. In the unhappy event that you develop oral infections or even mouth cancer, your halitosis will likely be very severe. Let's face it, bad breath and chewing tobacco just don't belong in your life. You will be healthier, and your mouth will be much more comfortable if you avoid tobacco use of any kind.

What Causes Bad Breath - How to Cure Halitosis

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Nisbet]Peter Nisbet

If you want to know what causes bad breath and how to cure halitosis, you first have to find out what causes it. It is difficult to cure a condition if you do not know what the cause it, but luckily the cause of bad breath is known. There might well be an argument about what the root cause is, but generally it is known to be caused by oral bacteria.

Sure, what you eat can cause incidental bad breath, but it is not halitosis. Thus, if you eat garlic then many will find your breath offensive, but only if you have not eaten garlic yourself. That is possibly why so many French eat garlic - because so many others do and that is their way of not smelling the rest! True halitosis, however, can not be 'cured' that way.

Many believe bad teeth to be the true cause of halitosis, but that too is incorrect. Again, bad teeth can contribute, but teeth rot due to the action of oral bacteria on the food debris in and around the gums and teeth. This bacterial action generates acid that attack the enamel of the teeth and cause dental caries. That in itself however does not cause bad breath.

Bad breath can be caused by various digestive problems, by problems with the oesophagus and by infections of the sinus, airway and throat. However, 90% to 95% of halitosis is caused by problems in the oral cavity or the mouth. Bad breath is more than just bad teeth that can be resolved by dental treatment, and needs more basic treatment than that.

The chemicals that cause the smell are commonly called VSCs, or volatile sulfur compounds. The main VSCs are hydrogen sulfide, the smelly gas that every schoolchild knows about, dimethyl sulfide and methyl mercaptan. These are formed in the fissures and cracks in the tongue, the cheeks and between the gums and the teeth where there is a lack of oxygen. The VSCs are emitted by a particular type of bacteria known as anaerobic bacteria that survive in the absence of oxygen. Expose them to oxygen and they cannot function.

These bacteria are not particularly bad: in fact they live in everybody's mouths. It is their action in digesting proteins that release the VSCs and hence the horrible smells. If you are not sure if your breath is bad or not, then clean the inside of your wrist then lick it. Allow the saliva to partially dry so that it becomes concentrated and then smell. The inside of your wrist is warm and will evaporate off the VSCs that you can smell.

However, the route to the cure is the cause. Anaerobic bacteria and food residues. If you keep your mouth clean from protein residues then you can reduce the source of food for these bacteria. Vegetarians will be less liable to suffer from halitosis than meat eaters will, although vegetable protein can also be broken down by the bacteria if allowed to accumulate in the mouth so nobody is completely immune.

The key is the fact that the bacteria are anaerobic. Expose them to oxygen and you either kill them or they stop all activity. If you brush the gums, tongue and cheeks with a soft brush and an oxygenated cleaner, then you will get rid of your bad breath. Use an oxygenated mouthwash and you will also help to pacify or kill these bacteria. You have to get the oxygen right down into the fissures between the papillae of your tongue, and the cracks in your cheeks, and also deep into the space between your teeth and gums.

Use a tongue scraper to coat your tongue with a paste that generates oxygen, then scrape it off. Use the mouthwash regularly, and before you know it, your halitosis and bad breath will be gone. I know, because I suffered. However, people no longer take a step back when I speak to them face to face. I no longer have to talk sideways and put my career in jeopardy because I cannot eyeball people when I speak to them.

If you have bad breath then the same will have happened to you, whether you noticed it or not. People will avoid coming close to you when you speak to them and you will only ever kiss the same girl once. Learn what causes bad breath and how to cure it. Don't suffer any longer, but more importantly, don't make others suffer when you speak to them. There is no need because there is a cure.

Bad Breath Out Of Nose : The Passage to Bad Breath

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Whozylee_Aris]Whozylee Aris

Did you ever think that your nose, not your mouth, could be
the cause of your bad breath? It's true! For adults and
children, bad breath out of the nose is caused by sinus
problems, nasal congestion, allergies, the common cold and
other forms of congestion. To make matters worse,
over-the-counter antihistamines and cold medicine can dry
out your mouth. Add the dry mouth (a haven for bad breath
bacteria) with the mucus dripping from your nasal passages
and you have double trouble: bad breath out of the nose and
out of the mouth. As word of note to parents whose children
have bad breath out of the nose, make sure they have not
lodged a pea or other small food item in their nose. This
has been an odd ritual among children for ages.

When you're sick you don't care what your breath smells
like, but once you're better, and back to work, your bad
breath will be in rare form, ready to offend anyone you
wish to talk to (or breathe near--remember the bad breath is
coming out the nose too!) To help you out, we've come up
with some chronic bad breath home remedies that will not
only make you feel better, but will get rid of conditions
that create bad breath out the nose, and make sure it
doesn't develop in your throat or mouth either.

Chronic Bad Breath Home Remedy: Drink at least eight
glasses of water per day to keep your mouth moist. If you
have allergies, or are on allergy medication, your mouth
can easily dry out. Add lemon or lime to the water to help
cleanse your system.

Chronic Bad Breath Home Remedy: For a homemade vaporizer
treatment, boil a pot of water and add enough vinegar so
you can smell it. Turn off the heat and then lean over the
pot just enough to inhale the steam. The steam and vinegar
will cleanse your nasal passages and help get rid of bad
breath out the nose.

Chronic Bad Breath Home Remedy: Rinse your mouth with salt
or lemon water. This will cleanse your mouth and eliminate
bacteria.

Chronic Bad Breath Home Remedy: Eat parsley which
has natural cleansing properties. Also, add some apple
cider vinegar to your drinking water as this will cleanse
your digestive system.

If you have bad breath out the nose it is very important
that you do not ignore the problem. It will not go away
unless you do something to cure it. Secondly, remember to
drink plenty of water and stay away from coffee and tea as
they have the opposite affect. And lastly, bad breath out
the nose can be caused by a combination of situations such
as dry mouth, nasal congestion and medicines. If you feel a
cold or allergies coming on, the best defense against bad
breath is to have a clean, well brushed and flossed moist
mouth and to eliminate any bacteria that may lurk there.
